Eunice M. Brock
A successful real estate agent, tireless advocate, and prolific writer, Eunice Brock has been a vital force in our community since moving to Chapel Hill with her family in 1959. Brock began her home-selling career in the mid-1960s while she also pursued a graduate degree from the UNC School of Information and Library Science. She worked with a local brokerage firm until founding her own agency in the mid-1980s, one of the first solely owned by a woman. Brock also claims another first: Eunice Brock & Associates was the first real estate brokerage to host a website. Early in her career, she got the nickname “Barracuda Brock” after another agent tried to dissuade a client from listing with her by characterizing her as a “barracuda.” His tactic backfired, and the clients went with Brock and related the story to her. The anecdote quickly entered local lore and was immortalized in a cartoon in the newspaper. In 1995 Brock sold the firm to one of her agents, Tony Hall, who continues to run the company today as Tony Hall & Associates.
A passionate advocate for her adopted hometown, Brock, who grew up in Greenwood, Mississippi, was and is active in local business and political matters. She participated in the Public-Private Partnership and is a frequent and outspoken attendee at Town Council meetings on issues from red-light cameras and the resource conservation district to the Apple Chill festival. She also shares her views in letters to the editor and penned a regular column, “My View,” for the Chapel Hill News. She later compiled those columns into a book by the same name. Her memoir, Year of Betrayal, was published in 2004. Brock is also a generous donor to nursing programs at UNC, endowing three
scholarships to honor her late daughter. At the School of Nursing, she established the Melinda Kellner Brock Public Health Nursing Scholarship and the Eunice M. and Melinda Kellner Brock Scholarship to Support Aspiring Nurse Practitioners. She also created the Melinda Kellner Brock Maternal and Child Health Scholarship at the Gillings School of Global Public Health. These opportunities ensure that deserving students are trained for meaningful careers addressing critical healthcare needs.
For her tireless efforts to grow and improve our community, we proudly induct Eunice M. Brock into the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Business Hall of Fame.
